A former Afghan interpreter who served alongside American troops was fatally shot in Houston after a confrontation over a parking space, igniting outrage within the refugee and veteran communities.
Abdul Rahman Waziri, 31, had built a new life in Texas after fleeing Taliban threats due to his work with U.S. Special Forces in Afghanistan. On April 27, he was reportedly checking his mail at his apartment complex when a dispute began with a neighbor who allegedly damaged his vehicle during a parking disagreement.
Witnesses say the confrontation appeared to deescalate—until the suspect returned moments later with a gun and shot Waziri multiple times in front of his home. He died at the scene.
The suspected shooter later turned himself in and surrendered the firearm to police. However, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office released him without charges, sparking fury among Waziri’s family and supporters.
Community leaders and fellow Afghan refugees are calling for a full investigation, insisting that justice must be served for a man who risked his life supporting American forces and sought peace in the country he helped protect.
