A new arrest picture of Potter taken in Minnesota shows that his appearance has changed in the 16 months he has been in jail.
Kim Potter, a former police officer, will get out of jail on Monday. She killed Daunte Wright during a traffic stop when she thought her handgun was a stun gun.
Potter, who is now 50 years old, served 16 months at the Shakopee Minnesota Correctional Facility and must now serve another eight months of controlled release.
In a recent arrest picture, the man who used to be a police officer in Brooklyn Center looks pretty down and out.
Before the mistake that killed Wright, Potter had been a cop for 26 years and had never made a mistake.
Wright, who was 20 years old at the time, was stopped in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, on April 11, 2021, because his license plates had expired. This was about 15 miles from where George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis in 2020.
Wright had a warrant out for his arrest because he didn’t show up to court for a gun crime. When Potter was trying to catch him, she thought her gun was her stun gun and shot him instead.
From his body camera, we hear Potter say in a threatening way, “I’ll tase you!” Before he fired a single shot, the man yelled, “Taser! Taser! Taser!” She is heard saying, “I grabbed the wrong f—ing gun,” over and over again before she passes out on the curb.
Even though a juror found the mother of two guilty of first and second degree manslaughter, the judge gave her a term that was much lighter than the state minimum.
Chu said that it was clear that Potter felt bad, and as she said this, she got very upset. She didn’t mean to hurt anyone. The judge has decided that her acts “call for a sentence that is significantly below the guidelines.”
For first-degree murder, the judge can give anywhere from a little over six years to almost eight and a half years as a sentence.
As part of his sentence, Potter had to say sorry to Wright’s family in public.
She yelled at Daunte Wright’s mother and other family members, “I’m so sorry I killed your son, father, brother, uncle, nephew, or grandchild!”
Katie, I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings. I know how much you love your child. “It breaks my heart to see how sad it is for you,” Potter said.
