Murdaugh, age 54, is in prison for life for killing his wife and son in South Carolina.
Alex Murdaugh said in a federal court filing on Monday that he lied to his insurance companies when he said that his late maid Gloria Satterfield tripped and fell because of the family dogs.
Satterfield died on February 26, 2018, after falling down the steps of the family’s main home at Moselle, which used to be a shooting farm in South Carolina.
In response to Nautilus Insurance Company’s fraud case against Murdaugh, his lawyers wrote, “No dogs were involved in Gloria Satterfield’s fall.” “After Ms. Satterfield died, the defendant made up Ms. Satterfield’s supposed claim that dogs made her trip and fall so that his insurance company would pay a settlement.”
Nautilus sued Murdaugh, his former friend and ex-attorney Cory Fleming, and others for theft after they reportedly stole $3.8 million from Nautilus and $500,000 from Lloyd’s of London that should have gone to the Satterfield children.
Nautilus has said that Murdaugh is trying to scam insurance money by getting the Satterfield children to fight him and then using the money for himself.
Murdaugh told the Satterfield boys that there wasn’t a deal because he and the other people who were in on it had already spent the money.
In their response, Murdaugh’s lawyers say that the Satterfields were able to get back more than $7.5 million because they said the disbarred lawyer stole insurance money that was supposed to go to them.
The paper says that the Satterfield estate had no right to the money in the first place if Murdaugh had lied about how he fell.
The lawyer for the family of the dead housekeeper, Eric Bland, says that Murdaugh is lying again to escape a ruling against him and to get Nautilus to sue the Satterfield estate.
The Satterfield family has a ruling against Murdaugh for $4.3 million, which he signed himself.
“You shouldn’t believe him. “He’s been found guilty of murder and is known to lie,” Bland said.
In June 2021, Murdaugh shot and killed his 22-year-old son Paul and his 52-year-old wife Maggie. In March, he was given two life sentences for those crimes. He is trying to change the decision.
Murdaugh said on the stand that he had lied to his family, his best friends, and his clients for decades.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division says it is looking into what happened to Satterfield.
Murdaugh still has a long way to go in court. He has been charged with more than 100 financial crimes because he stole almost $9 million from his old law company, clients, and the Satterfield children.
