After killing three Americans, an illegal immigrant who had participated in former President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and who had been released by a sanctuary county was given a life sentence.
Luis Perez, a 27-year-old DACA illegal immigrant from Mexico, was found guilty of the murders of Steven Marler, 38, Josh Hampton, 23, and an accomplice, a woman, last year and was sentenced this month to five consecutive life terms.
According to a 2012 and 2014 Breitbart News article, Perez was granted DACA protections, allowing him to remain in the United States despite his illegal immigration status.
Perez was taken into custody and accused of assault on a family member in Middlesex County, New Jersey, around the end of 2017. Perez was released back into the community despite a request for detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Then, in November of 2018, Perez returned to the home he formerly shared with Marler and Hampton and fatally shot them both. The police believe that Hampton’s 21-year-old girlfriend, Sabrina Starr, was behind the wheel of the getaway automobile.
Perez fatally shot Starr a few days later.
The Most Wonderful Mother Deborah Elkins, Hampton’s mother, spoke out in support of the “Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act” introduced by Republican North Carolina Senator Ted Budd in October 2019. The bill would provide Angel Families the legal ability to seek monetary damages from sanctuary jurisdictions in a civil lawsuit.
According to an exclusive story by Breitbart News, last year Angel Parents met with House Republicans begging them to support the legislation in a future Congress controlled by the GOP. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has been elected House Speaker since then, but the GOP has failed to propose the bill in either chamber.
