New data reveals a sharp surge in major crimes across Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s congressional district, where crime rates have more than doubled the citywide average since she assumed office in 2019.
The 14th Congressional District, covering portions of the Bronx and Queens, has experienced a 70% increase in reported crimes, compared to a 30% rise across New York City overall. Neighborhoods within the district—including areas served by the 110th and 115th Precincts—have seen the steepest climbs, with increases of 105% and 85% respectively.
The offenses include violent and property crimes such as murder, rape, assault, robbery, burglary, and grand larceny. Residents report feeling increasingly unsafe, citing gang activity, prostitution, and drug-related violence as daily realities in their communities.
Many constituents have voiced frustration with Ocasio-Cortez, accusing her of prioritizing national political causes over urgent local issues. Critics argue that her vocal support for reducing police funding has coincided with staffing shortages in the NYPD and emboldened criminal behavior.
Despite growing concern, Ocasio-Cortez has made no recent public statements addressing the rise in crime within her district. Community leaders are now calling for immediate action and renewed focus on public safety from their elected representatives as tensions continue to mount.
