In response to the implementation of a law in Florida that prohibits minors from attending “adult live entertainment,” an upcoming furry convention called Megaplex in the state has decided to enforce an age restriction, allowing only adults over the age of 18 to attend.
Megaplex, known as an event for individuals interested in anthropomorphized creatures, made the announcement on Wednesday, citing legal concerns and the safety of attendees and the convention as the reasons for the decision.
The Protection of Children Act, also known as SB 1438, specifically prohibits the admission of children to adult live performances, which include shows or exhibitions that involve nudity, sexual activity, sexual arousal, or explicit sexual acts in front of a live audience.
The enactment of this law has drawn criticism, with some arguing that Governor Ron DeSantis is taking away the enjoyment from activities such as furry conventions. However, there is a misconception that furries are inherently sexual, as the wider furry community does not view their interest as purely sexual. While some adult-oriented programming may be available at furry conventions, they are typically separated or held late at night.
Members of the furry community, including transgender individuals and owners of furry adult toy companies, express concerns about potential confrontations or legal issues in Florida due to the law. They appreciate Megaplex’s response and believe that the furry fandom is a friendly and inclusive space, especially for marginalized groups such as the LGBTQ community and neurodivergent individuals.
The rise of furry influencers on platforms like TikTok has attracted more young people to the fandom, with conventions reporting an increase in attendees under the age of 19. The age restriction at Megaplex has been disheartening for some younger furries who are now unable to socialize in this environment.
Despite the current age policy, Megaplex hopes to find solutions to include all age groups and families in their events and activities in the future. While some events on the convention schedule were labeled as “18+,” many of them took place in the evening, while other daytime activities catered to a general or adult audience.
Megaplex is scheduled to be hosted at the Hyatt Regency Orlando in September, and the organizers have expressed the hope that the age restriction will be temporary and that they can welcome attendees of all ages back in the following year.
