Former President Trump continued his bizarre attack on Republican governors on Friday morning by targeting another popular figure, Virginia’s Glenn Youngkin.
The ex-president, who is widely predicted to run for office again in 2024, took credit for both outcomes. While DeSantis came under severe fire, Youngkin received a backhanded vote of confidence and a strange remark about his name.
That’s a unique perspective on Young Kin. Trump said on Truth Social that the Chinese-sounding candidate (ironic because he is a billionaire) in Virginia would not have won without his help. He wouldn’t have even had a chance to win without my endorsement and a massive phone-in campaign I organized for him with the Make America Great Again coalition. But he recognizes and accepts this fact. More importantly, he is having a tough time with the Democrats in Virginia, but he will succeed.
Both DeSantis and Youngkin have been mentioned as possible primary opponents to Trump should he declare a 2024 White House candidacy as soon as next week. Despite Trump’s backing for both candidates’ gubernatorial campaigns, neither DeSantis nor Youngkin have declared their candidacy for the presidency.
Because Youngkin’s popular lieutenant governor, Winsome Sears, declared earlier Thursday that she would not support a Trump 2024 candidacy, it’s probable that Trump singled him out. She said she was a Trump fan in the past, but she now believes his time has gone in light of the midterm results.
A leader who knows when they’ve become a liability is a great leader, according to Sears. “A great leader knows when it’s time to leave the spotlight. The voters have spoken loud and clear on this issue.
Despite Trump’s sniping, Youngkin has not tried to defend himself in the same way that DeSantis has. Trump had already attempted to invent one of his signature nicknames for the governor of Florida, dubbing him “Ron DeSanctimonious,” before launching his attack on DeSantis on Thursday. Re-election for DeSantis on Tuesday was secured by a margin of roughly 20%, suggesting that the effort was unsuccessful.
Trump took things to a new level on Thursday. First, he took credit for DeSantis’s close victory in the 2018 gubernatorial election, then he referred to him as an “average governor” and tried to discredit DeSantis’s handling of the COVID pandemic, despite the Florida governor’s staunch opposition to lockdowns and mandatory vaccination and mask use.
At the end of his tirade, he finally revealed his true annoyance: the possibility of a primary challenge in 2024.
We are now in the midst of Ron DeSanctimonious’s game-playing. President Trump’s criticism of DeSantis came to a close. “When asked by the Fake News if he would run for president if Donald Trump did, he responded, “I’m only focused on the Governor’s race; I’m not looking into the future.” Oh, that’s not the right response if we’re talking about loyalty and sophistication.
