Barr said the Democrats want Trump to win the Republican nomination so they can defeat him in the general election in 2024, so they plan to utilize the legal system to interfere in the primary.
On Sunday morning, Trump’s former attorney general argued that progressives are trying to strengthen the MAGA party by indicting the previous president and engaging in several other legal battles.
In the hush money case involving Stormy Daniels, a grand jury in Manhattan took steps toward charging Trump at the end of last month. He was the first sitting president to face criminal charges. The ex-president appeared in a New York court last week.
Barr remarked on ABC News’ This Week broadcast, “The left is always talking about how bad it is to politicize the criminal justice system, and I couldn’t agree more that that’s a serious risk.” For decades, I’ve been raising my voice in protest.
And he said, “And this is a shame.” “It’s pretty clear that this counts as that kind of abuse.”
When Trump stated last year that he will compete for president again in 2024, the former AG, who resigned after the 2020 election but before the January 6 Capitol violence, called it a “tragedy” if he got the Republican nomination.
Barr, 72, stated in March that even if Trump won the election, he would still vote for him.
As he put it, “getting in the middle of the Republican primary process and making it a circus” by filing accusations against Trump “may achieve its goal.”
Because he is the least formidable of the Republican contenders and the one most likely to lose again to Biden, he believes that “smart Democratic strategists know this will help Trump,” and that they want him to be the nominee.
Trump’s accusation and court date have only emboldened his most devoted supporters.
The number of Republicans who said they planned to vote for him increased after he was charged at the end of March.
Nikki Haley, Trump’s former ambassador to the UN, Vivek Ramaswamy, a biotech multimillionaire, and Asa Hutchinson, Trump’s former governor of Arkansas, who is running on a clear anti-Trump ticket, are Trump’s three primary opponents thus far.
Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, the person most likely to be able to beat Trump in a general election, has not yet said whether or not he would compete in the 2024 Republican primary.
He consistently places second behind Trump in voter preference surveys and occasionally even tops the former president.
The former president seemed unconcerned by the charges brought against him last week. On Saturday night, he joined Kid Rock and other celebrities in Miami to see a UFC bout. People in his new home state of red applauded him enthusiastically.
