Later, former President Donald Trump seemed to make fun of Pence’s welcome.
Former Vice President Mike Pence gave a speech at the yearly meeting of the National Rifle Association (NRA) on Friday afternoon.
After NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre introduced Pence, the crowd booed loudly and seemed determined to drown out those who were cheering for him.
Pence began by saying, “Well, hello, NRA,” which was met with more boos.
Then, someone in the crowd yelled, “We love you, Mike!” over the booing.
Pence said, “I love you too,” which made the crowd laugh.
Later in the day, when former President Donald Trump was speaking, he seemed to make light of the booing by telling the crowd that he heard they “made news” with how they treated Pence.
Trump said, “I hope you gave Pence a good, warm approval,” and the crowd booed again.
After saying “No, because if you want to know the truth, he’s a nice guy,” Trump seemed ready to step in and stop the booing. He is. That one was a good guy.
But then he made a joke about how he had heard Pence had a “very rough” look.
This is a big story that just came out. You’re now well-known. He then talked about polls that showed he was ahead of all other confirmed and possible Republican candidates for president, including Pence, and said, “I don’t know what you did, but your introduction today made the news.”
After what happened on January 6 at the U.S. Capitol with Trump fans, many Republicans stopped liking Pence because he helped confirm the results of the 2020 presidential election. The former president says that Joe Biden won the race because of a plan to help him lose.
There have been reports that Vice President Pence might run against President Trump in 2020. Pence has not yet said whether or not these reports are true.
