The president has stated his vote for a candidate “depends” on the person chosen.
Ronna McDaniel, chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, announced on Sunday that any Republican presidential contender who wants to debate on the RNC’s stage must commit support for the eventual nominee.
The first primary debate will take place in Milwaukee, and according to McDaniel, all candidates will be required to sign the commitment before taking part in the event. Nevertheless, former President Trump has voiced objections to the vow, mirroring his reluctance to make a similar pledge in 2016.
During CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, McDaniel said, “We’re saying you’re not going to get on the debate stage unless you make this commitment.” It is expected that all Republican national committee debate participants would pledge to back their party’s nominee no matter who it may be.
“There’s a good chance that they’ll all agree to sign it. Indeed, I do, “, McDaniel chimed in. President Trump, I believe, would enjoy participating in a debate.
In a January interview with conservative radio personality Hugh Hewitt, Trump made clear he wouldn’t back such a vow.
When asked how he would feel about losing the nomination, Trump told Hewitt, “That would have to depend on who the candidate was.”
Just Trump and Nikki Haley, a former governor of South Carolina, have declared their candidacies for the 2024 election. Former Vice President Mike Pence, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis are just a few of the other names who have been mentioned as potential candidates.
Republican Party opponents of Trump are vocal, and they include former House Speaker Paul Ryan. Last weekend, Ryan publicly stated that if Trump were the GOP nominee, he would not be attending the national convention.
“We are doomed to defeat if Trump is once again our nominee. Indeed, it’s that obvious, “That’s what Ryan told Fox 6 last week, he said. “In 2018, 2020, and 22 we all lost with him. All of us are aware of this. He’s going to lose us another election, so I’m just glad he’s not our candidate.”
“Excellent candidates are in the race. In short, I am familiar with every single one of them. As they are all good friends of mine, I do not doubt that any of them who are considering running would be excellent candidates “Furthermore, he remarked. If we don’t nominate Donald Trump, I believe we can defeat Joe Biden.
