On Thursday’s “The Last Word” on MSNBC, California Democrat Adam Schiff called former President Trump and House Republicans who voted against certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election the “primary threat to our democracy.”
When asked if he would urge Chuck Schumer to be placed on the Senate Intelligence Committee if elected to the United States Senate, anchor Lawrence O’Donnell stated, “I realize it is incredibly early, and I have never asked that candidate at this stage of the campaign this question before.”
Representative Schiff stated, “I would certainly be interested in continuing my work on the Intelligence Committee, but more than that, I am committed to doing everything I can to defend our nation.” One of the sad things I have learned over the past several years is that the greatest threat to our country is now within. It is typical of a demagogue like Trump to say such a thing. It results from the 140 Republican House members who put their desire for power ahead of their commitment to the Constitution and voted to nullify the results of the presidential election. I vow to fight for California, for American democracy, and for an economy that works for everyone in whatever capacity you put me in. Because ultimately, and I have discussed this with President Biden, people start to contemplate alternatives if the economy is not delivering and democracy is not delivering. No other political system comes close to matching the benefits of the democratic republic we have established. I hope that my descendants will carry on that tradition.
