Former AG William Barr expressed confidence in the DOJ’s ability to build a criminal case against Trump in an interview this week.
Barr made these assertions during a discussion on Margaret Hoover’s show “Firing Line.”
Barr stated early on that he did not support Trump’s choice to run again and did not believe that Trump was “the perfect person to lead either the Republican Party or the country forward.”
According to Barr, one of the biggest reasons for Trump to run again is the numerous federal, state, and congressional investigations now underway. “He has a tremendous ego and doesn’t want to go down in history as a failure,” he adds. He intends to make amends with people who he believes have harmed him.
Barr claims that Trump “selected folks who were weak candidates merely because they were attempting to prove their allegiance to him by alleging that the election was stolen” in crucial races during the 2017 midterm election. In terms of strategy, it was a complete bust.
As part of their criminal investigation into Trump’s handling of U.S. government materials, the FBI conducted a raid at Mar-a-Lago earlier this year. The DOJ proves my suspicions that these were genuinely classified materials and that the president then knowingly participated in efforts to mislead, deceive, and play games with the Department and the government after receiving the subpoena. So, “those are serious claims,” the attorney general responded when pressed.
When asked if Trump’s actions constituted a “major enough criminal” to justify prosecution, Barr responded, “That’s serious.”
“As I have already mentioned, the law mandates the president’s indictment. This is my best guess at what I think happened,” As he put it. However, the evidence they have thus far is adequate. After hearing their argument, what steps should we take?
After a leak of damaging information, Barr said, “How can you preserve these secrets if you let someone like this who, you know — if the facts are as raw as they may be and you let someone get away with it?” arguments for filing criminal charges against Trump.
