Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) suffered a concussion after a fall at a dinner event on Wednesday night and will spend the next several days in the hospital.
At a gathering and supper for the Senate Leadership Fund, a political action committee established to elect Republicans to the upper house, the 81-year-old lawmaker fainted. McConnell’s spokesman, David Popp, said on Wednesday that the senator “tripped at a local hotel during a private dinner” and was “brought to the hospital where he is seeking treatment.”
As a polio survivor, McConnell has problems walking and fell at his Kentucky home four years ago, breaking his shoulder. To continue “monitoring and therapy,” Popp said the lawmaker will need to stay in the hospital, he said Thursday morning.
On Wednesday night, Leader McConnell suffered a concussion after falling on the floor during a dinner affair. He’ll be around for a while,” Popp said. The Leader is grateful to his supportive employees and skilled medical professionals.
According to Thursday’s story from The Hill, other Senate Republican leaders have denied knowing anything about their colleague’s health.
“We don’t know much at this point,” Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) told reporters. I was at another table at the time, so I missed whatever was said. Not a lot of information is at our disposal. There will inevitably be some spares.
Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), a member of the Republican leadership in the Senate, has said that he, too, is unaware of any significant changes in the health of the seven-term senator. I’ve been informed he’s taking it easy, but beyond that, I don’t have any details, he continued.
As reported by DC Fire and EMS Department spokeswoman Vito Maggiolo on Thursday, an “adult male” was taken from the Waldorf Astoria on Wednesday night and sent to a local hospital. He reportedly said he didn’t know if McConnell was the one who fell or where he was being treated, citing an NBC News report.
Legislator Mitch McConnell is “going to be Fine,” according to an unnamed senator who talked to the media and claimed to have spoken with McConnell’s family.
On Thursday morning, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (NY) wished his Republican colleague a fast recovery. He said that he has been thinking about Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who was injured the night before and is still hospitalized. Whenever I wake up, I pray for the leader and his family, asking God to bless them with serenity, strength, and health. I called this morning to let the leader know that he and his crew are in my thoughts and prayers.
McConnell’s health issues mirror those of his fellow lawmakers.
Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania checked himself into the hospital earlier this month after feeling dizzy at a party retreat. He was trying to get some assistance for his acute despair. The former rust belt mayor and lieutenant governor, now 53 years old, suffered a stroke days before the Democratic primary and spent the first two months of the general election campaign in the hospital. Several voters in Pennsylvania had doubts about Fetterman’s competence to represent them since he stuttered and lost his train of thought during the campaign.
Last week, California Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein was hospitalized after contracting shingles. The 89-year-old, who just announced she will not run for reelection, is currently resting at home.
