A Salvadoran man linked to the notorious 18th Street gang was arrested in Bealeton, Virginia, after leading authorities on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash. The suspect, identified as Javier Enrique Canas-Escobar, reportedly tried to escape but was captured shortly after his vehicle was disabled.
According to officials, Canas-Escobar is wanted in El Salvador for weapons-related charges and is considered a high-ranking member of the transnational criminal organization. He faces several local felony charges, including eluding law enforcement, hit-and-run, and assaulting officers during the pursuit.
Authorities revealed that he entered the U.S. illegally and had been using an alias. Immigration officers have filed a detainer request to ensure he remains in custody pending removal proceedings.
The arrest comes amid increased federal efforts to target individuals associated with violent gangs and prioritize the deportation of those with serious criminal records.
