Tensions erupted during recent demonstrations in Seattle as two journalists were reportedly assaulted while documenting anti-ICE protests. Independent cameraman Cameron Higby sustained a concussion after being choked, punched, and kicked by masked individuals who appeared to be part of a violent group. His injuries required emergency medical treatment.
Meanwhile, reporter Brandi Kruse and her team were targeted in a separate protest in Tukwila. They were drenched with liquid, obstructed from filming, and sprayed with repellent, forcing them to retreat. A nearby veteran who tried to intervene was also physically assaulted.
Both journalists expressed concern over how local leaders and mainstream media outlets have characterized the protests, claiming that the level of violence has been significantly downplayed. They argue that the narrative of “mostly peaceful” demonstrations fails to reflect the hostile encounters experienced by members of the press.
The incidents raise growing questions about press freedom and public safety during civil unrest, especially when violence is allegedly ignored by those in authority.
