A Kentucky-based cryptocurrency investor has been arrested in New York City after allegedly kidnapping and torturing a 28-year-old Italian tourist inside a luxury SoHo apartment for nearly three weeks.
John Woeltz, 37, is accused of luring the victim—who had previous dealings with him—into the apartment on May 6 under the pretense of a business meeting. Once inside, the man was reportedly restrained and subjected to ongoing abuse, including electric shocks, physical beatings, forced drug consumption, and threats involving power tools.
Investigators uncovered disturbing evidence inside the high-end apartment, which was reportedly leased for up to $40,000 a month. Among the findings were Polaroid photos of the abuse, weapons, and tools allegedly used in the assault. The residence was outfitted with luxury features and heightened security.
The victim escaped on May 23 after managing to reach a traffic enforcement officer and call for help. Woeltz was taken into custody and is currently being held without bail on charges including first-degree kidnapping, assault, and unlawful imprisonment.
Another individual, 24-year-old Beatrice Folchi, was also detained in connection with the case. Authorities are continuing their investigation and have not ruled out the involvement of additional suspects. The incident has intensified scrutiny over disputes tied to digital currency dealings.
