A pickup truck veered onto a crowded sidewalk in downtown Boston on Tuesday, striking several pedestrians and prompting an emergency response from city authorities. The incident occurred near the intersection of Summer and Kingston streets during the late afternoon, a time when foot traffic in the area is typically high.
According to Boston Police, at least five people were injured, with two reported in serious condition. Emergency medical crews arrived at the scene within minutes, treating victims on-site before transporting them to nearby hospitals. The identities of the injured have not yet been released, but officials confirmed that none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening at this time.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the truck suddenly mounted the curb without warning. Some pedestrians were able to jump out of the way, while others were hit or thrown to the ground. Several storefronts also sustained minor damage in the path of the vehicle.
The driver, a man in his 40s, remained at the scene and was immediately detained by police. Preliminary reports suggest the driver may have lost control of the vehicle, though authorities are still investigating whether mechanical failure, a medical emergency, or driver impairment played a role. A field sobriety test was conducted, and the results are pending.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu issued a brief statement expressing concern for those injured and praising the rapid response of first responders. She also emphasized the city’s commitment to pedestrian safety, noting that the incident will be fully investigated.
The area was temporarily closed to both foot and vehicle traffic as investigators examined the scene and cleared debris. Boston Police have asked any witnesses or individuals with video footage to contact the department to aid in the ongoing investigation.
No charges have been filed as of Tuesday evening, but officials say more information will be released once a full incident report is completed. The city is also reviewing traffic camera footage to piece together the moments leading up to the crash.
