Famous comedians Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle hurled criticism at disgraced actor Will Smith while together for a performance in the U.K. about the actor’s attack against Rock that took place during this year’s Oscars.
“F*** your hostage video,” stated Rock as part of a portion of his stand-up routine seemingly in reference to the apology that Smith issued in the wake of the incident. “Yes, that s*** hurt. He played Ali. I can’t even play Floyd Mayweather.”
Rock’s statements were quickly followed up by Chappelle, who also spoke out about the incident, saying, “That was some scary s***.”
“A lot of people forget who Will Smith is,” Chappelle went on, highlighting Smith’s upbringing out in west Philadelphia. “Then 10 minutes before he was about to get the biggest award … he acted like he was back in Philadelphia.”
Earlier this month, Chappelle posed ROck a question on stage at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena seat in the U.K. asking if the slap hurt, to which Rock answered, “G*****n right … the motherf***er hit me over a bulls*** joke, the nicest joke I ever told.”
“Will did the impression of a perfect person for 30 years, and he ripped his mask off and showed us he was as ugly as the rest of us,” stated Chappelle. “Whatever the consequences are … I hope he doesn’t put his mask back on again, and lets his real face breathe. I see myself in both men.”
Smith put out an almost six-minute video near the start of summer attempting to apologize to Rock for the slap.
The video sported Smith, wearing a ball cap and a polo while seated in what seemed to be his home, giving out answers to questions from critics and fans alike from the internet. In a halting voice, Smith expressed his apparent remorse for the events that happened that ended up costing him his career in Hollywood.
“It’s been a minute …,” read text on the video starts. “Over the last few months, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and personal work.”
Smith then takes the time to read and answer various questions about the event, in which he stormed the stage at the Academy Awards show and assaulted Rock for simply making a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Just a short while later, Smith was issued a “Best Actor” Oscar for the role he played as tennis patriarch Richard Williams.
“Why didn’t you apologize to Chris in your acceptance speech?” start Smith.
“I was fogged out by that point,” he stated. “It’s all fuzzy. I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk and when he is, he will reach out.”
Smith issued an apology to Rock, his family and most notably, the comedian’s mother, who he claims he saw in an interview and finally understood just how much the events affected her.
“I just didn’t realize, and you know, I wasn’t thinking about how many people got hurt in that moment,” stated Smith in the video. “So, I want to apologize to Chris’s mother. I want to apologize to Chris’s family, specifically [Chris Rock’s younger brother] Tony Rock. You know, we had a great relationship. You know, Tony Rock was my man. And this is probably irreparable.”
Smith goes on to answer another question in the video concerning whether or not his wife forced him to go up and attack Rock.
“No. I made a choice on my own, from my own experiences, and my history with Chris,” concluded Smith. “Jada had nothing to do with it. I’m sorry, babe, and I want to say sorry to my kids and my family for the heat that I brought on all of us.”
