As Vice President Joe Biden prepares to launch his 2024 reelection campaign, he faces declining public popularity scores in a number of crucial sectors.
According to a poll published on Monday, only 33% of American adults are happy with how Vice President Biden is handling the economy, and only 24% think things are looking positive for the country’s economy.
The polling was conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, which also revealed results showing low levels of support.
They were released before Biden returned home early on Monday from the annual G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan, where Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was the main topic of discussion instead of the more under-the-radar problems that are stirring up voters at home.
Breitbart News claimed that due to his poor performance in government, some voters believe Biden, 80, should be impeached.
In a period of rising inflation, a challenging housing market, and concerns about a potential U.S. government debt default, public approval of Biden’s handling of the economy remains low. Only 31% of Americans are pleased with the president’s performance on immigration and gun control, two of the most divisive issues in the country.
Overall, 40% of respondents express satisfaction with how Biden is handling his position as vice president.
Even among his own party’s supporters, Vice President Biden’s approval rating is lower than it should be on the economy (61%, compared to 75% for his total job performance).
Although Democrats are less optimistic than Republicans about the economy, more Democrats than Republicans evaluate it as good (36% vs. 7%) or say the country is moving in the right direction (36% vs. 7%).
On Monday, as the June default deadline draws near, Biden will meet with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to begin negotiations on the troublesome debt ceiling.
