We’ve mentioned how Senator Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) absence is notable given the difficulty her party is experiencing in endorsing President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees. Despite being unwell with shingles, Feinstein announced her departure at the beginning of March and promised to return by the end of the month. However, March has ended, and Feinstein has yet to return. Democrats are pressuring Feinstein to resign amid ongoing speculation about her whereabouts.
Former Obama aide and “Pod Save America” co-host Jon Lovett has called for Feinstein’s resignation. The media paid a lot of attention to this. Lindsay Kornick of Fox News says:
In an episode of his podcast titled “Pod Save America,” Lovett advocated for the retirement of the 89-year-old senator.
It’s time for Dianne Feinstein to leave the Senate. Lovett said that more people ought to pressure her to quit her work.
Dianne Feinstein’s continued tenure as senator from the state with the most population in the United States has been met with much criticism. Because of her shingles, she hasn’t been very productive recently. How dreadful. For Lovett, who is not a member of the Judiciary Committee, Durbin’s allegation that “it has made it basically impossible to move a lot of these lower court nominees to the Senate for a vote” is false. She is not to blame for this. Dianne Feinstein, who has no business being a senator, has made it impossible to confirm judges.
For allowing Feinstein to continue working despite her illness, he was also upset with her support staff.
It’s unfortunate to see someone depart who has served their state well for so long, but I think it’s unfair that Dianne Feinstein’s supporters are helping perpetuate the running joke that is California’s lack of a senator.
However, Lovett does not act alone. On Monday, “Feinstein” was a trending topic because so many people wanted her to step down.
Since she won’t be there for 60 of the 82 scheduled Senate votes in 2023, her absence is having an effect on judicial nominations, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle on Monday, which doesn’t generally pay much attention to national politics.
Jezebel’s subheader quoted Kylie Cheung, an extreme leftist, as saying, “Feinstein needs to step down right now.” And Jezebel felt compelled to bring up the subject of abortion. The finale is just as potent since it focuses on the end:
As a member of four Senate committees, Feinstein represents 40 million Americans’ interests. We should praise her for her service and realize that, while she can’t do her job, her continued presence in the Senate isn’t exactly a win for women’s rights, as women and pregnant people would be impacted the most if liberal justices aren’t approved promptly.
Feinstein’s office said in February that she would not seek reelection, but in December she was given permission to serve out the rest of her current term.
John Fetterman (D-PA) has also left his position as a senator. Many were concerned about his sanity after he suffered a stroke just before winning the Democratic primary in May of last year. To help him cope with his feelings of despair, he checked himself into a psychiatric hospital. He is expected to return to the Senate on April 17.
