After a car incident that killed newlywed Samantha Hutchinson, police say drunk driver Jamie Lee Komoroski told them she “did nothing wrong.” Komoroski’s BAC was over three times the legal limit.
After drinking 0.261 drinks, Komoroski, 25, allegedly crashed her automobile into a golf cart. A toxicological report from South Carolina police states that Hutchinson, then 34, was driving in with her new husband at Folly Beach.
According to the incident report, the ex-waitress at the taco restaurant was so drunk at the time of the collision that she appeared disoriented, saying things like, “All of a sudden something hit me,” and “I did nothing wrong,” when police arrived.
Folly Beach Police Sergeant Zac Halpern’s report states that Komoroski admitted to drinking a beer and a tequila pineapple within an hour of the accident.
Halpern claims he asked her how drunk she was and she mumbled something about an eight before she demanded a lawyer.
Police noticed that Komoroski appeared to try to cover her eyes from them as they attempted to perform a sobriety test, but she still refused and yelled for her partner.
As Halpern helped her out of the car to do a balance check, he noticed that Komoroski had problems standing on her own, but she insisted that she was alright.
Based on Halpern’s narrative, Komoroski displayed signs of confusion at the scene of the accident, alternating between pleading for her companion and experiencing a hysterical outburst upon witnessing the devastation.
Halpern, the officer involved, encountered the need to clarify his instructions three times before Komoroski acquiesced and consented to be placed under arrest inside the police vehicle.
Halpern’s observations indicate that the repetition of a question already addressed serves as a distinct indicator of intoxication.
The newlyweds’ car was thrown 100 yards and flipped many times when a rented Toyota Camry driven by Komoroski, who was travelling 40 mph over the 25 mph speed limit, collided with it on a dimly illuminated residential street.
Samantha’s body, still draped in her wedding gown, was pronounced dead at the site. Aric Hutchinson, her 36-year-old husband, sustained a brain injury in addition to many fractured bones, and was sent to the hospital.
After two operations, Aric was released from the hospital on May 4.
Although he avoided injury, Komoroski was charged with three charges of DUI resulting in death or serious bodily injury and two counts of reckless murder.
She has been denied bond and is still being held in the North Charleston prison.
