The Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has stated that he had a “pretty good” understanding of who leaked the decision to reverse Roe v. Wade. He added that the justices were now in danger because of the leak.
When interviewed by The Wall Street Journal, Alito made these comments. There is no right to abortion, he wrote in the landmark case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
Although Alito claimed to have a “pretty good idea” of who was responsible, he cautioned that his suspicions did not constitute “the level of proof needed to name someone.” His explanation continued, “It was a part of an effort to stop the Dobbs draft from becoming the court’s decision.” For the duration of the six weeks, it was used in this way in an attempt to intimidate the judge and his or her staff.
While the Supreme Court “did a good job with the tools they had,” Alito argued that the evidence was insufficient to issue a formal finding of guilt.
The conservative judge said that the leak had generated an atmosphere of “suspicion and distrust,” as well as a potentially hazardous one.
Alito stated, “Those of us who were thought to be in the majority and to have agreed with my draft opinion were really assassination targets.” As one of us was saying, “It was reasonable for people to think that killing one of us might stop the decision in Dobbs.”
And the idea that a conservative judge may have leaked the ruling to the public beforehand, as some have speculated, was, in his view, completely absurd, he said. This has made us a prime murder target. Can I force myself to do that? Five of us: Wouldn’t we have done everything to avoid that? It’s quite improbable.
Despite the lobbying, a majority of the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe.
