Security footage captured the moment a woman reportedly hit a police officer in the chest.
Protests erupted Friday at the Nebraska state capitol building after legislators passed a bill prohibiting abortions after 12 weeks and limiting access to gender transition operations for anyone under the age of 19. At least six people were arrested.
Opponents of the contentious law yelled and threw what seemed to be bloody tampons onto the legislative floor around 2:40 p.m., prompting a temporary suspension of debate while arrests were made in a chamber balcony. For the continuation of the debate, the balconies were emptied.
According to a press release issued to Fox News Digital by the Nebraska State Patrol, two women, 24-year-old Lucia Salinas and 36-year-old Maghie Miller-Jenkins, were detained on suspicion of hindering government activity and disturbing the peace.
After being asked multiple times to stop shouting from the balcony, 25-year-old Mar Lee was taken into custody and charged with disturbing the peace and trespassing. The state patrol said they also detained 56-year-old Danna Seevers, who was on the opposite balcony with bill supporters, for defying a valid order when she refused to leave.
About an hour later, a lady assaulted a trooper in the chest when he stopped her from pushing past him as they were attempting to take into custody a guy who was allegedly trying to prevent a Sgt. at Arms from opening a door at the back of the legislative chamber.
Both 40-year-old Benjamin Buras and 33-year-old Sara Crawford were taken into custody after the incident.
After refusing to leave when asked by police, Buras was taken into custody on charges of trespassing and resisting arrest. Crawford was taken into custody on suspicion of hindering a law enforcement official.
The six of them were taken to the Lancaster County Jail for processing.
Governor Jim Pillen, a Republican, has announced his intention to approve the contentious legislation that passed with enough votes to overcome a filibuster.
Since lawmakers moved through with the bill on Tuesday, protesters in Lincoln, Nebraska, have been rallying outside the state capitol.
Lawmakers voting inside the chamber reportedly heard chants of “Shame, shame!” coming from demonstrators outside the building.
The 12-week abortion ban would prohibit transgender people under the age of 19 from undergoing gender surgery, with limited exceptions for rape and incest.
Nebraska is one of several states that have lately implemented anti-abortion and transgender policies, including a ban on abortions after 20 weeks.
A six-week restriction that was mooted last month did not make any headway.
