At a press conference on Tuesday in El Paso, Texas, Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced that should Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas refuse to resign, the incoming Republican majority in the House would investigate the matter and consider impeachment proceedings.
McCarthy, the likely next Speaker of the House, recently discussed the almost four million illegal crossings of the southern border that had occurred under the Biden administration. McCarthy claims that Mayorkas’ inept handling of the border situation is evidenced not just by the record high number of illegal crossings but also by the spike of fentanyl entering the United States from Mexico.
“In this case, I think the Secretary should step down. He has no right to continue in that role. All orders, all actions, and all failures will be investigated by House Republicans if the Secretary does not quit. We’ll decide if we have enough evidence to launch an impeachment investigation, “McCarthy stated,” the text reads.
Secretary Mayorkas “would have been fired by now for the shortcomings of what he has created” if he were in charge of any corporation, he said.
As McCarthy put it, “if the probe leads to an impeachment inquiry, we will follow through.”
McCarthy, according to Fox News contributor Bill Melugin, informed him they intend to have congressional hearings on the big problem right at the border.
“It’s true what McCarthy says, the leader. Responsibility must be taken by the United States for the enormous catastrophe on the southwest border. If Secretary Mayorkas does not take immediate action to enforce immigration law and protect the border, Republicans will hold him accountable, “Jim Jordan (R-OH), the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement.
Due to the relative ease with which one can cross the narrower section of the Rio Grande and then surrender to the Border Patrol, the number of illegal crossings in the El Paso Sector rises throughout the summer and continues into the fall. The El Paso Sector saw 53,284 interactions in the month of October, the first month of the fiscal year 2023. That’s a lot, considering the busiest areas in previous crises have been the Del Rio and Rio Grande Sectors.
According to Breitbart, after hearing that Title 42 would soon be repealed, around one thousand migrants, largely from Venezuela, entered the United States through El Paso. Following the expiration of Title 42 on December 21, it is expected that around 18,000 unlawful crossings will occur daily. Currently, between 6,000 and 8,000 people attempt to enter the southern border illegally every day.
