Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican presidential candidate, has made his stance clear on the issue of transgender individuals serving in the armed forces. Since 2021, openly transgender people have been allowed to serve in the military, and Ramaswamy firmly stated that he does not support reinstating a ban on transgender members.
During an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” Ramaswamy addressed questions regarding his “anti-woke” credentials. The host, Martha Raddatz, referred to him as the “godfather of the anti-woke movement” at a recent event. In response, Ramaswamy emphasized that he is “very focused” on the fact that transgender “ideology” should not be directed at young people.
It is important to note that President Biden swiftly overturned a Trump administration order that prevented transgender individuals from serving openly under their preferred gender. This change, finalized in June 2021, applies to all active-duty, National Guard, and Reserve personnel, as well as students at U.S. military academies.
While Ramaswamy is considered a candidate for the 2024 Republican nomination, many political observers currently rank him behind frontrunners such as former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. According to a recent survey by Fox News, only 3% of Republican primary voters favor Ramaswamy, in contrast to the 53% who support Trump and the 21% who favor DeSantis. Even former Vice President Mike Pence (6%) and former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley (4%) outperformed Ramaswamy in the poll.
Nevertheless, Ramaswamy proudly identifies himself as an “outsider,” drawing parallels to Trump’s unexpected victory in the 2016 presidential race. He acknowledges that he is the first millennial seeking the Republican nomination for president, highlighting the need for conservatives who have felt marginalized to have a strong voice.
When approached by Fox News Digital, Ramaswamy stated that he hopes the GOP sees “transgenderism” as a “mental health disorder.” He believes that individuals with mental health disorders should not be categorically barred from military service but evaluated on a case-by-case basis. His spokesperson added that Ramaswamy believes more people should join the military as it can provide citizens with a shared purpose and meaning that is currently lacking.
Ramaswamy’s support for transgender individuals serving in the military stands in contrast to some of his Republican counterparts. He strongly opposes the indoctrination of young Americans into transgender ideology. For him, evaluating individuals based on their specific circumstances and mental health is key.
As the presidential campaign progresses, Ramaswamy aims to make his mark as a candidate who challenges conventional thinking within the Republican Party. While facing an uphill battle against more prominent contenders, he remains proud of his outsider status and seeks to bring fresh perspectives to the forefront of conservative discourse.
