The U.S. soldier, 23-year-old Travis King, currently detained in North Korea after crossing the DMZ line, was under the cloud of disciplinary action for alleged assault, as revealed by military officials.
Pentagon sources disclosed that King willingly ventured into North Korea after being involved in multiple incidents in South Korea that led to police intervention. In September 2022, he was accused of assaulting a man at a South Korean club, which resulted in a case being settled. The following month, King acted aggressively toward police officers responding to a fight, leading to further legal troubles.
The Korean court reported that during the altercation, King directed expletives at police and locals and damaged a police car when taken in for questioning. He later paid for the vehicle’s repairs and was fined $4,000 by the Seoul Western District Court in February after pleading guilty to assault and destruction of public property. Following this, he spent nearly two months in detention for the assault charge before being released on July 10, as per The Associated Press.
However, rather than being sent back to America as intended, King unexpectedly crossed into North Korea. U.S. Forces Korea spokesperson, Col. Isaac Taylor, confirmed that they believe he is currently in North Korean custody and are in communication with their Korean People’s Army counterparts to address the situation. The entry into North Korea was deemed willful and unauthorized.
Witnesses recounted that King ran across the border yelling, “ha-ha-ha,” with some assuming it was a reckless prank or stunt, but quickly realizing the gravity of the situation when soldiers started pursuing him.
The detention coincides with the U.S. dispatching the USS Kentucky to South Korea, marking the first time in over 30 years that a nuclear-armed submarine has been sent to the area. The situation adds tension to an already delicate region.
