A New Mexico magistrate judge has been permanently disqualified from holding judicial office after authorities discovered a suspected gang member living on property linked to him.
Federal agents arrested a Venezuelan national believed to be affiliated with the violent criminal group Tren de Aragua. The suspect was found staying in a guesthouse located on the judge’s property and was taken into custody on charges related to firearms and immigration violations.
Investigators determined that the individual had been allowed to reside there with the knowledge of the judge’s family. Authorities also found that the suspect had access to weapons registered under the judge’s daughter.
Following the discovery, the judge submitted his resignation. The state’s highest court later issued an order barring him from ever seeking a judicial role again, citing the seriousness of the incident.
No criminal charges have been filed against the judge or his relatives. However, the case has prompted scrutiny over how individuals connected to public officials are vetted, especially when national security or organized crime concerns are involved. The investigation remains ongoing.
