Justin Amash has become a liberal hero as he votes with Nancy Pelosi and calls for the impeachment of Donald Trump. But, to people back in his district, he is washed up.
Michigan State Rep Jim Lower announced his campaign for Amash’s seat and the voters appear to want to give it to him. Practical Political Consulting has conducted a poll and they found that Lower is beating Amash by an incredible 16 points, 49 to 33. Amash barely beat his Democratic opponent in 2018 and he may have been reaching out to the radical left for new votes.
But that doesn’t work when you abandon your base along the way.
According to a new poll from Practical Political Consulting, Rep. Amash is now polling 16 points behind his pro-Trump primary challenger, 49-33.
Politico has reported that President Trump is also considering endorsing Lower.
“Trump has raised the primary challenge idea with Vice President Mike Pence and North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows, a close Trump ally who co-founded the conservative House Freedom Caucus with Amash. Trump has also addressed the subject with Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, a former Michigan GOP leader who remains influential in the state,” Politico reports.
Lower, who is staunchly pro-Trump, said that he had been planning to run for the seat eventually, but decided now is the right time after Amash’s tweets about impeaching the president.
“Congressman Justin Amash tweets yesterday calling for President Trump’s impeachment show how out of touch he is with the truth and how out of touch he is with people he represents,” Lower said, according to a report from the Detroit Free Press. “He must be replaced and I am going to do it.”
Amash has not ruled out running against President Trump in 2020 as the Libertarian Party candidate.
