The Southern Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest Protestant denomination, has formally called for the reversal of the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision that legalized same-sex marriage across the United States.
During their annual meeting, delegates overwhelmingly approved a resolution urging the high court to overturn the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges ruling. The measure denounces the decision as a violation of biblical principles and an overreach of judicial authority, asserting that marriage should only be recognized as a union between one man and one woman.
Leaders of the denomination argued that the ruling has contributed to moral decline and religious liberty conflicts, while expressing hope that the current composition of the Supreme Court might open the door for reconsideration.
The resolution is non-binding but reflects the denomination’s renewed push for political and cultural change in line with traditional Christian values. It also signals a continued alignment with conservative legal movements aiming to reshape key precedents on religious grounds.
