President Donald Trump has signed an executive order establishing a new national facility dedicated to supporting homeless U.S. veterans. Named the National Center for Warrior Independence, the project will be built on the Veterans Affairs campus in West Los Angeles and is expected to provide housing and comprehensive support services for up to 6,000 veterans by 2028.
The plan includes redirecting funds that were previously used to support housing for undocumented immigrants. Those resources will now go toward construction, operations, substance abuse recovery programs, job assistance, and mental health support aimed at helping veterans regain independence.
The executive order also instructs the Department of Housing and Urban Development to increase voucher support specifically for homeless veterans. Additionally, the Department of Veterans Affairs is mandated to reinforce accountability measures, including reviewing and reversing prior decisions that reinstated employees previously dismissed for misconduct.
As part of the broader initiative, a feasibility study will be conducted to evaluate expanding services at the Manchester VA Medical Center in New Hampshire, with the goal of transforming it into a full-service facility.
This move marks a significant step in the administration’s focus on prioritizing care for American veterans and reshaping the use of federal resources to address veteran homelessness on a national scale.
