Breanna Brocker, an Arizona State University senior, was visibly distressed during an interview with ABC15, as she discussed the repercussions of her involvement in an anti-Israel protest on campus. Arrested and subsequently suspended, Brocker lamented the impact of these actions on her academic and personal life, particularly her inability to participate in her upcoming graduation ceremony.
Expressing her dismay, Brocker noted that the suspension not only prevented her from attending her graduation but also disrupted the plans of family members who were set to travel to see her graduate. This was especially poignant for her, as she had already missed a graduation ceremony once before—her high school graduation in 2020, which was altered by the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the interview, Brocker reflected on her decisions, stating her continued support for the causes she stood for during the protest. Despite the personal setbacks, including potential impacts on future job prospects, she affirmed that she would stand up for the same causes again, even if it meant facing similar consequences.
This incident at ASU resulted in the arrest of at least 72 students following the establishment of an anti-Israel encampment on April 26, 2024. The aftermath saw Brocker and her fellow protesters banned from campus, prompting a lawsuit against the university. The students’ legal action accuses ASU of infringing on their free speech rights and retaliating against them for their participation in the protest.
A U.S. district judge denied a motion to lift the suspension, leaving Brocker and others in a state of uncertainty about their immediate educational futures.
