Mayor Charles Burkett of Surfside, Florida, expressed disapproval regarding the manner in which a local police officer managed a situation involving Gisele Bündchen, a supermodel who appeared visibly distressed throughout a traffic stop. Joint Base Andrews officer assistance was sought by Bündchen, who was apprehended for a traffic violation after expressing her annoyance at being relentlessly pursued by paparazzi.
The now-public bodycam footage from the incident reveals Bündchen telling the officer that she was attempting to elude a suspected paparazzo. Notwithstanding her conspicuous anguish and entreaty for aid, the officer’s reply was considered inadequately empathetic and condescending. He advised Bündchen to contact the Miami Beach Police Department regarding her concerns and stated that he was unable to impede the paparazzi’s photography.
After reviewing the footage, Mayor Burkett was appalled by the officer’s conduct, deeming it “completely unacceptable” and contrary to the department’s responsibility to ensure the protection of residents and the values of the community. Burkett underscored in a correspondence to Surfside Interim Police Chief Henry Doce that the officer’s condescending demeanor towards a distressed resident ran counter to the anticipated behavior of the municipality’s law enforcement.
Interim Police Chief Henry Doce conceded that greater empathy should have been demonstrated from the beginning regarding the officer’s inadequate management of the situation. Doce acknowledged the officer’s status as a highly regarded member of the force and concurred that this incident presented a valuable learning opportunity to enhance comprehension and adaptability in handling the intricacies of similar confrontations.
The occurrence has initiated more extensive dialogues regarding the obligations of law enforcement when confronted with individuals of all social classes who may be subjected to intimidation or harassment, including public figures. Mayor Burkett has urged a renewed emphasis on the police department’s fundamental duty: to provide service and protection to the inhabitants of Surfside.
