Uri Berliner, a veteran editor at NPR, has resigned after 25 years of service following a controversial period marked by his criticism of the organization’s editorial direction. Berliner, who had previously highlighted what he perceived as a liberal bias within NPR, made his resignation public through a statement on X, expressing his inability to continue in an environment where he felt disparaged by the leadership.

This resignation follows Berliner’s suspension and a “final warning” from NPR after he authored a critical essay in Free Press. In the essay, he argued that NPR had lost the trust of the American public due to its coverage of several high-profile stories, including the Hunter Biden laptop story and the theory of systemic racism. He cited a lack of balanced reporting and an overwhelming number of Democratic voters within the newsroom, which he believed skewed the organization’s journalistic objectivity.

Berliner’s critique extended to NPR’s recent leadership under CEO Katherine Maher, whom he accused of having divisive views that exacerbated the issues he identified. His frustrations were compounded when Maher, in her communications to staff, seemingly dismissed his concerns and upheld the news organization’s editorial standards.

The internal conflict reached the public eye when other NPR staff, including “Morning Edition” host Steve Inskeep, publicly refuted Berliner’s conclusions. This public dissent within the ranks of NPR highlighted the deep divisions over the organization’s journalistic integrity and its approach to covering politically charged topics.

Despite his resignation, Berliner maintained that he does not support defunding NPR and expressed his wish for the organization to succeed and continue producing important journalism. His departure underscores the ongoing debate within media outlets about bias, representation, and the challenge of maintaining public trust amidst a highly polarized political climate.
