Donald Trump stated that he would be donating his Presidential salary if elected during the 2016 campaign trail and so far he’s kept his word.
To date, he’s donated somewhere in the ballpark of $178,000 to various causes including preservation of Civil War era battlefields, and some educational donations.
In fact, according to PolitiFact: For the second quarter in a row, President Donald Trump declined to take a salary and opted instead to gift the quarterly installment to a government entity, this time to the Department of Education.
At a White House press briefing, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders presented a check for $100,000 to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.
Now he intends to donate this quarter’s portion of his salary to the Department of Health and Human Services to help with the opioid abuse problem facing our great nation.
Despite this, PolitiFact still labels it as “in the works” as if they expect a man of President Trump’s means to sweat the Presidential salary.

Acting Secretary Eric Hargan said in a statement at the White House press briefing that Trump wrote HHS a personal check and that the money will be used to “attack the opioid epidemic” through research, management, prevention and treatment. The acting secretary said that the decision for Trump was personal, since the president had lost one of his own family members to addiction.
“The President is personally dedicated to defeating this crisis because addiction hits home for so many of us,” Hargan said. “You heard him share the story in his opioid speech about how he lost his own brother to alcoholism. And speaking personally, opioid addiction has been a presence in my hometown, in my family, for years. It was years ago, in fact, that I lost a close relative who constantly struggled with opioids.”
