Israel conducted a retaliatory strike against Iran, targeting at least one site in the central part of the country, according to multiple news outlets. This action came less than a week after Iran launched a significant attack on Israel involving over 300 drones and missiles, most of which were intercepted by Israel and its allies. The Israeli retaliation, described as “limited” by military sources, seemed to target strategic sites in Isfahan, which is home to Iran’s Natanz nuclear research facility and a major airbase.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reaffirming Israel’s right to self-defense, disregarded international calls for restraint. The U.S. was informed of Israel’s plans to retaliate 24 to 48 hours prior, but the Biden administration reportedly did not endorse the response. Following the strike, President Joe Biden reiterated his stance, warning Netanyahu that the U.S. would not participate in a counter-offensive but called for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Iranian state media reported loud noises near Isfahan and stated that all nuclear facilities in the area were secure. They attributed some of the explosions to three quadcopter drones shot down by Iran’s air defenses. In response to the ongoing situation, flights over Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz were suspended, and several inbound flights were diverted.
The exchange of strikes underscores the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, set against the backdrop of previous Israeli actions in Syria, which targeted Iranian forces and led to Iranian casualties. This ongoing conflict continues to draw international attention and poses significant concerns for regional stability.
