Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, at the age of 83, has announced her intention to run for re-election to Congress in 2024. Pelosi, who has served in Congress since 1987, cited the need for her assistance in addressing the issues of crime and homelessness in San Francisco.
During an interview with MSNBC, Pelosi pledged to take action against crime, including arrests of shoplifters and drug users. She also mentioned plans to offer housing to homeless individuals, with the option to remove them from the streets if they refuse.
While Pelosi acknowledged that San Francisco faces challenges related to crime and homelessness, she argued that the situation is not as dire as portrayed in the media. She mentioned efforts to address mental health issues, drug use, and the need for affordable housing.
Pelosi’s decision to run for re-election comes amid concerns about her age and the health of longtime political leaders. She handed over formal leadership of the Democratic caucus earlier in the year but has remained a member of Congress. Pelosi played a key role in passing major legislative initiatives during her tenure, including stimulus packages and infrastructure bills, as well as leading impeachment efforts against former President Donald Trump.
