42 Million Face Food-Stamp Freeze as Shutdown Deepens

As the federal government shutdown extends into its third week, more than 42 million Americans who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) could see their benefits halted come November.

A memorandum from the United States Department of Agriculture warned states that if lawmakers fail to approve new funding, there will not be enough money to distribute full monthly SNAP allotments. The agency noted the program requires roughly $8 billion each month to operate.

In reaction, several states have issued alerts to benefit recipients and taken emergency measures to avert mass disruptions. One governor declared a state of emergency to mobilize state funds and shore up food-aid systems in case federal support lapses.

The looming cut-off has placed added pressure on congressional negotiators, with Republicans accusing Democrats of stalling over healthcare provisions, while Democrats counter-accuse Republicans of prioritizing agendas over sustaining nutrition assistance for vulnerable families.

With no resolution yet in sight and the holiday season approaching, advocates warn that the breakdown could push significantly more families into food insecurity—and strain food-banks and local social-services networks already stretched thin.
