Federal prosecutors have opted not to appeal a judge’s decision removing the death penalty from the case against Luigi Mangione, meaning capital punishment will no longer be pursued in his federal trial.
Mangione is accused in the 2024 fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a case that initially led prosecutors to seek the death penalty.
A federal judge dismissed the murder charge that would have made Mangione eligible for execution, ruling that the legal threshold for capital punishment was not met.
By declining to challenge that decision, prosecutors have effectively confirmed that the death penalty will not be part of the proceedings.
Mangione still faces additional federal charges and could receive a life sentence if convicted.
