Republicans will take back the Senate, and Democrats will lose the House of Representatives.
Why? People in the United States are fed up with the current economic climate, which includes high inflation, high food and gas costs, high crime rates, and a persistent problem at the southern border.
Now, Republicans did not win by the landslide that pollsters had projected (how can they keep getting it wrong?!). But once they take control of the House, the president’s spending spree will come to a screeching halt.
On Wednesday, however, a seemingly naive Joe Biden admitted that he had misinterpreted the results of the midterm elections.
During a news conference at the White House, a reporter said, “You mentioned that Americans are frustrated.” Even with yesterday night’s election results, 75% of voters still believe the country is moving in the wrong direction. As you consider a run for president in 2024, what do you plan to do differently in the next two years to alter the public’s perception of the course the country is on?
“Nothing,” Biden replied, “because they’re just discovering what we’re doing.” More information will increase support for our efforts.
So, Biden answered, “I’m not going to change the direction.” Nothing is going to change around here because I don’t want to. We have only just begun. Even though journalists and political analysts predicted a massive red wave, it never materialized.
I’m sorry, Joe, but you came up short. Both the House and Senate are going to fall out of your party’s hands. The red tide may have receded to a pink trickle, but you came up short anyway.
Voters rejected the candidates chosen by outgoing President Trump, many of whom say the 2020 election was stolen from him, allowing the Democrats to prevent more defeats.
According to the AP, “about half of voters say inflation factored significantly in their vote” because prices for everything from groceries and gas to homes and food have skyrocketed over the past year, making people more worried about inflation. About eight in ten voters cite the economy’s poor condition as a major reason for their vote. A majority of people, though only just, blame Biden’s policies for the near 40-year highs in inflation.
85% of Americans said they believed the “nation is moving in the wrong direction” in an Associated Press survey taken before the election, and Biden’s support numbers have been tanking for months.
“Since Biden was elected president, the majority of Republicans have been dissatisfied with the country’s course. Previously optimistic about the current state of affairs, Democrats now see the country as heading in the wrong direction, according to a recent poll.
It was pure chance that Biden’s party only lost five to seven seats in the Senate and not forty in the House.
Trump was still technically the party’s leader after his devastating 2020 defeat. But outside of the most conservative states, Trump’s favored candidates often fared poorly. Furthermore, Trump chose major losers in easily winnable contests; the vast majority of them were election deniers who claimed Trump had truly won in 2020. Voters flat-out rejected it.
Biden has spent the final days of the campaign attacking Trump and warning that he will bring about the end of democracy if his candidates are elected. But that’s not why Democrats stopped losing ground: it was terrible candidates like Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, who was endorsed by Trump.
Trump was the night’s biggest loser, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis coming out on top. But Biden must realize that in 2024, he will likely face DeSantis rather than Trump, and if he doesn’t do anything different, he will be defeated handily.
