Greg Abbott, the Republican governor of Texas, has claimed that repealing Title 42 would cause “chaos” at the southern border.
Abbott expressed concern in an interview with ABC News’ “This Week” that border communities, which are already coping with a spike in illegal migrant crossings, could be hit especially hard by the implementation of the Trump administration’s border and health strategy. After this Wednesday, when Title 42 expires, border patrol officials will no longer be able to reject migrants immediately in case of a public health emergency.
Abbott predicted “total mayhem” if the courts don’t block the repeal of Title 42 on Sunday. All of the United States, not just Texas, will feel the effects of that decision.
Abbott emphasized that the continued inflow of thousands of migrants poses a risk to public health even if the COVID outbreak has been contained.
“The danger of uninformed international tourists to locals’ health was highlighted, regardless of whether or not Coviello was the main focus of his concerns.
“Wait to make any adjustments until we’ve given them careful consideration.
Abbott warns Biden to be careful of legalities. Earlier this month, a federal court temporarily blocked Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” program, which would have sent certain non-Mexican migrants back to Mexico to wait out their immigration processes rather than being arrested or released in the United States.
Instead of implementing Title 42, Abbott said the same would happen “if the President steps up and does his duty, mandated by the Constitution and directed by the federal courts and enforces Remain in Mexico.” The government, he added, “repels or arrests and throws them behind bars” if they try to enter the nation illegally.
Republican-governed states of Texas and Oklahoma have formally requested that the federal government maintain the status quo of Title 42’s border policy. ABC News reports that Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich wants to challenge the Supreme Court’s decision not to hear the state’s appeal of the lower court’s decision to extend Title 42.
Many professionals believe that when Title 42 is no longer in effect, the daily number of illegal immigrants will rise to 14,000. Tim Meads of The Daily Wire said an estimated 126,000 illegal immigrants would have entered the country by December 30.
