Biden Admin Planning To Ban LED Light Bulbs

In a letter to the U.S. government, consumer organizations complained that LED light bulbs are more expensive and less effective than incandescent lamps. Power Administration

The Biden administration is planning to outlaw traditional incandescent light bulbs nationwide as part of its effort to reduce energy consumption and protect the ecosystem.

The Department of Energy (DOE) completed the regulations in April 2022, and they state that incandescent light bulbs will no longer be sold in shops as of August 1, 2023. On that date, the DOE will begin strict enforcement of the prohibition, though it has already ordered retailers to stop stocking the bulbs in question and begun issuing warning letters to establishments in recent months.

The lighting industry is already working toward more energy-efficient products, and this move will accelerate up that trend so that the finest products can be brought to American customers and a better, brighter future can be built, as Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm put it last year.

The DOE claims that compliance with the regulations will result in annual savings of $3 billion for consumers and a reduction of carbon emissions of 222 million metric tons over the next 30 years.

The regulations mandate the use of LED lights rather than traditional electric or halogen ones. More and more homes in the United States have switched to LED lights since 2015. Less than half of homes, according to the latest statistics from the Residential Energy Consumption Survey, use LEDs as their primary or exclusive source of lighting.

Overall, the government statistics revealed that 47% of individuals use LEDs almost exclusively, 15% use incandescent or halogen almost exclusively, and 12% use compact fluorescent almost exclusively. (CFL). Some 26% more reported not having a primary source of illumination. The Department of Energy issued new regulations in December that made it unlawful to purchase CFL lights. Because of this, LEDs are now the only type of light bulb that can be sold legally.

In addition, households with better earnings were more likely to have LED lighting, as indicated by the survey. This implies that low-income Americans will bear the brunt of the energy regulations. While 54% of households with incomes over $100,000 used LEDs, only 39% of households with incomes of $20,000 or less did so.

“We believe that further government interference in the market is unwarranted given that consumers already have access to more energy-efficient lighting options, such as light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs, if they prefer them over incandescent bulbs,” the coalition of free market and consumer groups wrote to the DOE last year in opposition to incandescent bulb bans.

While the statement acknowledged that LEDs are superior in energy efficiency and lifespan to incandescent lights, it also noted that they currently cost more and are less effective at certain tasks. It’s preferable for customers to have the option of both incandescent and LED lighting rather than have incandescent lights suddenly phased out.

The organizations also claimed that the government’s estimates of the warming benefits of energy-saving regulations are “speculative, based on assumptions, and likely to be biased in the hands of agencies with a regulatory agenda.”

In contrast, the Trump administration’s regulation protecting incandescent light bulbs and giving consumers an option was repealed by the DOE rule in April 2022. Donald Trump, the 45th president, was also not a fan of LED lights. In 2019, he complained that they are overpriced, ineffective, and made him “look orange.”

In contrast to the Trump administration’s actions, environmental organizations applauded the Biden administration’s crackdown on gas light bulbs.

“It’s long past time to get rid of inefficient old-fashioned light bulbs because the Trump administration illegally slowed down this process for more than two years,” said Joe Vukovich, a champion for energy conservation at the Natural Resources Defense Council. He went on to say that the new LED lights would last at least 10 times longer than their incandescent predecessors and would only use one-sixth as much energy to produce the same quantity of light.

The Department of Energy (DOE) has recently issued several regulations concerning the minimum required energy efficiency of common household appliances like gas ranges, microwaves, washers, dryers, refrigerators, and air conditioners. Business owners who don’t need government assistance can use the more advanced technology available today, according to those who say the regulations are an excess by the federal government.

Biden issued an order on his first day in office in 2021 instructing the DOE to make “major changes” to the rules for appliance regulation established by the Trump administration and in effect at the time of Biden’s inauguration. About a dozen regulations that would impact a broad variety of goods and how they use energy were put into motion by the agency a month later.
