During a noteworthy LGBTQ+ PRIDE event organized by the Department of Defense (DoD), Lt. Gen. DeAnna M. Burt of the United States Space Force made a statement that raised eyebrows. She emphasized that she would prioritize officers’ access to “gender-affirming care” over their qualifications in certain job assignments.
Burt acknowledged that her usual approach involved assessing job performance and qualifications when selecting officers for specific roles. However, she felt compelled to take into account the safety and well-being of her troops and their families, considering the recent enactment of laws in multiple states that restrict transgender surgeries, puberty blockers, and cross-sex hormones for minors.
Highlighting the urgent need for top-down leadership to facilitate cultural transformation, Burt revealed that over four hundred anti-LGBTQ+ measures had been introduced in state legislatures throughout the country since the start of the year. This alarming trend had the potential to undermine the welfare of service personnel, their families, and overall readiness within the force.
“While I strive to match the right person to the right job, such as Squadron command, by assessing their job performance and relevant experience first,” Burt explained, “I also consider their personal background and the impact of their family dynamics. However, due to the restrictive laws in certain states, I am compelled to consider alternative candidates who may be less qualified but feel safer being their authentic selves and performing at their highest potential.”
Former Space Force Lt. Col. Matt Lohmeier took to Twitter to voice his disagreement with Burt’s statement, suggesting that she had engaged in the very behavior he was dismissed for. Lohmeier had previously been relieved of command after expressing his concerns about Marxism infiltrating the U.S. military during a conservative podcast.
“I was once unfairly removed from command in the @SpaceForceDoD on grounds of ‘being politically partisan while working in an official capacity.’ That accusation was entirely unfounded,” Lohmeier shared. “Now, we witness Lt. Gen. Burt embodying the dark side of political partisanship in public service.”
It is evident that Burt’s remarks have sparked a significant debate, highlighting the complexities surrounding the intersection of personal beliefs, military service, and the evolving landscape of LGBTQ+ rights within the armed forces.
