Florida Governor Ron DeSantis took aim at the Biden White House during a press conference on Thursday, criticizing what he deemed as “inappropriate” behavior at a recent event where the pride flag was given more prominence than the American flag. According to DeSantis, this incident serves as validation for Florida’s parental rights measure.
Addressing the crowd, the Republican governor stated, “When they had this transgender flag displayed at the White House, surpassing the American flag, that’s wrong. It’s not the proper way to display our national flag.” The audience responded with applause.
DeSantis went on to express his disapproval of what he described as “inappropriate conduct” at the White House, referring to incidents involving transgender individuals exposing themselves and engaging in questionable behavior. He claimed that even the White House had to admit the impropriety of such actions.
Pondering the situation, DeSantis questioned the rationale behind promoting curricula related to these matters in classrooms. He asked, “If it’s deemed inappropriate to showcase such content at the White House, why would you want to expose second-graders to it in their classrooms?”
Critics, particularly Democrats, have accused DeSantis of signing a parental rights law that restricts classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in early grades. They have dubbed the law the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, despite the absence of the terms “gay” or “don’t” in its actual text.
The Florida governor, who is also considered a potential presidential nominee for 2024, was responding to a controversy that unfolded over the weekend. The incident began when the pride flag was flown alongside two American flags at an event.
Reacting to the situation, Republican Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas introduced legislation aiming to prohibit the display of any flag other than the American flag atop federal buildings.
Moreover, Republicans strongly criticized the White House after video footage surfaced showing two shirtless transgender activists attending the event. The behavior of the activists was widely condemned, with White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre calling it “simply unacceptable” and stating that those involved would not be invited to future events. The White House spokesperson emphasized that such incidents were not commonplace during this administration.
