During a recent interview, former Attorney General William Barr expressed his strong opinions about former President Donald Trump’s behavior and alleged criminal actions. Speaking on CBS News’s “Face The Nation,” Barr discussed the federal indictment against Trump and two other ongoing criminal cases.

Barr’s remarks came in response to Trump’s recent attacks on him, where the former president used derogatory language like “a slob,” “a stupid person,” “a coward,” “a low life,” and a “gutless pig” to describe Barr. These insults were hurled after Barr provided an unfavorable analysis of Trump’s legal situation.

Having served under both Trump and former President George H.W. Bush, Barr acknowledged that Trump had faced unfair investigations in the past. However, he emphasized that this did not absolve Trump of his fundamental flaws and reckless behavior, which often resulted in disastrous situations that harmed any political cause he associated himself with.

Barr cited a specific case where Trump was solely responsible for the negative outcome, stating that Trump had no right to retain certain documents that the government had been trying to retrieve for over a year through quiet and respectful means. Barr asserted that Trump lacked a legal basis for holding onto those documents and accused him of deceiving the Department of Justice.

Regarding the charges of criminal obstruction against Trump, Barr deemed the evidence “very strong,” highlighting that much of it came from Trump’s own legal team.

Disputing Trump’s claim that he should be shielded by the Presidential Records Act, Barr explained that the purpose of the statute, enacted after the Watergate scandal, was to prevent presidents from removing official documents from the White House.

When asked about Trump’s potential sentence if convicted, Barr refrained from providing a direct answer but expressed his reservations about the idea of a former president serving time in prison. He acknowledged Trump’s positive qualities and achievements but stressed that he exhibited the traits of a narcissist, consistently engaging in reckless conduct that endangered his political followers, as well as the conservative and Republican agenda.

Barr firmly believed that Trump always prioritized his own interests and ego gratification over the country’s best interests. He likened Trump’s behavior to that of a defiant nine-year-old, constantly pushing boundaries to assert dominance. Barr expressed concern that the country should not become a therapy session for a troubled individual like Trump.

Regarding potential legal actions, Barr predicted that Trump would face prosecution in the federal criminal investigation surrounding his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. However, he cautioned that prosecuting such a case would pose challenges due to considerations of the First Amendment. Barr also expressed skepticism about the strength of the criminal investigation in Georgia and the likelihood of charges being filed.
