Chris Christie, a Republican presidential contender who has been critical of former President Donald Trump, has changed his focus to criticizing Republican governors who have outlawed juvenile sex-change treatments. Christie’s criticism is directed toward governors who have the Republican Party nomination for governor. On Thursday, during an interview with Brian Kilmeade of Fox News, Governor Chris Christie voiced his dissatisfaction with the policies of some state governments that prohibit transgender procedures for kids. He suggested that decisions regarding the procedures involved in sex change should be left up to parents and the children in their care without any involvement from the government.
Christie stressed his conviction that the government should not become more intrusive in the lives of individuals or broaden its scope of authority. He emphasized how important it was for parents to be involved in significant decisions that would affect their children. Christie said that it should be the parent’s decision rather than the governor’s decision when Kilmeade questioned whether a parent’s decision should prevail in the event that a 14-year-old expressed a desire to change genders. He used the example of Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who had served as governor of Arkansas in the past, and stated his confidence that she would place more weight on the decisions made by a mother than on those made by the government.
In 2021, the law that prohibits juveniles from undergoing sex-change treatments was passed into law despite the veto of the Republican governor of Arkansas at the time, Asa Hutchinson. Individuals who have received “gender affirming care” are now able to take legal action against medical practitioners who perform such procedures on minors as a result of legislation that was signed into law by the current governor, Sarah Huckabee Sanders. This legislation was brought back into effect after she signed it. On the other hand, only recently, a federal judge who had been selected by President Obama declared the prohibition to be illegal. Other Republican governors, including those from the states of Florida (Ron DeSantis), Tennessee (Bill Lee), and Mississippi (Tate Reeves), have also signed legislation along these lines. In May, DeSantis, who is running for president and is trying to position himself as a strong contender within the Republican Party, adopted a set of five measures that made it illegal for juveniles to undergo sex change treatments.
The most recent words made by Christie are an endorsement of his previous statements on CNN, in which he differentiated himself from the positions of many other Republicans. The fact that he does not support legislation that prohibits child sex-change treatments could make it difficult for him to win over traditional conservatives. The hostile response and booing that Christie received during a speech he gave at the Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference demonstrate that the persistent criticism that Christie has leveled at the party’s presumptive nominee, Donald Trump, creates challenges for his campaign.
