Joe Biden’s Plan to Secure The White House Again: Ending Surprise Fees

Claims have been made that Joe Biden is determined to tackle surprise “junk fees” that consumers encounter on various everyday products as part of his efforts to regain the presidency. These hidden charges, found in industries such as ticket sales, food delivery, airlines, car rentals, and cell phone bills, are often added at the last minute, deceiving customers with initially attractive prices.

During a White House press conference, Biden expressed his opposition to these fees and announced his administration’s commitment to fighting against them. He highlighted how such charges disproportionately affect working-class families, adding unnecessary financial burdens and making it challenging for them to meet their bills.

Biden’s focus on junk fees aligns with his broader strategy of taking on corporate interests and advocating for the concerns of working-class Americans. Senator Elizabeth Warren praised Biden’s approach, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating that the government is on the side of the people rather than solely supporting big corporations.

The call for regulation of the ticketing industry gained traction after a Ticketmaster site breakdown caused frustration among Taylor Swift fans. Although Ticketmaster denied engaging in anticompetitive practices, the incident renewed discussions about the need for oversight.

Apps like Grubhub, DoorDash, and Uber Eats often surprise customers with additional fees at the end of the ordering process, after they have already invested time and made their selections. Similarly, car rentals frequently involve unexpected expenses like extra insurance or fees for young drivers, leaving customers with limited alternative options.

Cell phone bills also frequently include hidden charges comprising a combination of fees and taxes imposed by both the government and service providers. These fees amount to billions of dollars annually and contribute significantly to consumers’ overall bills.

While Biden’s efforts aim to increase transparency by requiring companies to disclose fees upfront, it does not necessarily eliminate the charges themselves. However, the move will benefit customers by ensuring they are fully aware of the total cost before making a purchase. Live Nation, which owns over 200 venues, has already committed to implementing transparent pricing for tickets, potentially benefiting over 30 million customers. Biden called on other companies to follow suit.

Additional examples of hidden junk fees include last-minute baggage fees imposed by airlines, which have generated billions of dollars in revenue. Despite government scrutiny, there has been limited progress in restricting these charges. Some airlines have even introduced charges for checked bags on basic economy tickets.

The banking industry also relies on junk fees to increase profits, including overdraft charges, credit card late fees, and account maintenance fees. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has proposed rules to address excessive credit card late fees, as these fees alone generate billions of dollars in revenue for credit card companies.

By tackling junk fees across various industries, Biden aims to demonstrate his commitment to making a positive impact on everyday issues faced by Americans and to counterbalance the influence of large corporations.
