AOC’s New Strategy: Subpoenaing Supreme Court Justice Roberts

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic representative hailing from New York, has put forth a groundbreaking proposal that has reverberated across the globe. In a remarkable move, she suggested that Congress should employ its authority to issue subpoenas in order to compel Supreme Court Justice John Roberts to testify before lawmakers on matters concerning ethics.

During an exclusive interview with CNN, aired at the crack of dawn on a Sunday morning, the congresswoman declared that the Senate Judiciary Committee, under Democratic control, had commenced an investigation into the intricate web of conflicts of interest and entanglements. She firmly voiced her belief that if Chief Justice John Roberts refused to appear voluntarily before Congress, the consideration of subpoenas must be on the table. Not just once, but twice, she emphasized the importance of this measure.

The Senate Judiciary Committee had extended an invitation to Chief Justice Roberts, urging him to testify about the ethical standards upheld by the Supreme Court and the proposed reforms. This momentous hearing was slated to take place in early May. However, the esteemed justice turned down the offer, creating a stir among lawmakers.

During that period, Senator Dianne Feinstein of California had taken a medical leave due to her battle with shingles. Her absence meant that the Democrats lacked a majority on the panel, rendering them unable to overcome opposition from the Republicans in the event of a subpoena vote. However, Senator Feinstein has since returned to Capitol Hill, reestablishing a favorable balance.

Ocasio-Cortez, while expressing her concerns, specifically cited Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, asserting that Congress must establish more binding and rigorous ethical guidelines. She further advocated for the possibility of impeachment, emphasizing the array of options available to address misconduct, overreach, and abuses of power. According to her, the Supreme Court has evaded the level of scrutiny essential to maintain its legitimacy, inadvertently jeopardizing the democratic fabric of the entire nation.

In light of the series of conservative victories in the past year, particularly in cases revolving around abortion access, religious freedom, affirmative action, and President Joe Biden’s student debt plan, Ocasio-Cortez delved into the subject of limiting the authority wielded by the nine justices on the Supreme Court. She even broached the topic of expanding the court’s membership, a prospect that has garnered much attention and debate.

Expressing her grave concerns, Ocasio-Cortez cautioned that unchecked power and an absence of balance within the courts would lead to an undemocratic and perilous expansion of authoritarianism within the Supreme Court. She pointed out the unsettling consequences of recent rulings, such as the erosion of abortion rights and the denial of full personhood and dignity to LGBTQ individuals in the United States.

“These rulings represent a dangerous march towards authoritarianism and a concentration of power within the court,” she warned. “The court is heading down a treacherous path, and we must take notice.”
