In a surprising twist of events, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez faced a wave of criticism from fellow progressives after publicly endorsing President Biden’s re-election campaign in 2024.

During a captivating interview on the popular podcast “Progressive Perspectives,” Ocasio-Cortez was confronted with the question of which candidate she would support for the Democratic presidential nomination in the upcoming election cycle. Despite her previous alignment with progressive figures like Marianne Williamson and Robert Kennedy Jr., the 33-year-old New York representative firmly expressed her support for Biden, acknowledging the challenges he faced while emphasizing his accomplishments within those constraints.

“I believe President Biden has navigated the limitations with commendable resilience,” Ocasio-Cortez asserted. “Considering the field of candidates, I find his re-election bid the most promising. It is crucial to recognize that every presidency experiences ups and downs, and while there were areas that could have been improved, I appreciate the strides he made with initiatives like the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act, particularly in advancing our climate agenda.”

Ocasio-Cortez also acknowledged that there were areas where Biden’s administration fell short, attributing these shortcomings to “deep-seated structural issues” entrenched within the Democrat-controlled United States Senate.

The congresswoman’s endorsement sparked a lively and impassioned debate among left-leaning voices on Twitter. Many expressed a sense of betrayal, considering Ocasio-Cortez’s previous alignment with the progressive movement and her staunch support for Bernie Sanders. Former Sanders campaign press secretary Briahna Joy Gray openly criticized Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement, characterizing it as a “deviation from progressive interests.” Gray highlighted the perceived disconnection between the progressive movement and the current political climate, asserting that the endorsements from Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders failed to align with the majority of Democrats who did not wish to see Biden seek re-election.

Gray advocated for progressive lawmakers to demand tangible commitments in exchange for their endorsements or leverage the campaigns of candidates like Williamson and Kennedy Jr. to shed light on the failures of Biden and the Democratic Party on critical issues such as Ukraine and healthcare.

Within the Democratic party, voices echoed Gray’s sentiment, accusing Ocasio-Cortez of prioritizing her personal political trajectory over challenging the established power structures. They argued that Biden’s presidency had been detrimental to the United States, speculating that Ocasio-Cortez had been influenced or “swayed” by more moderate Democrats to endorse him.

On the other side of the spectrum, some Twitter users admonished Gray for questioning the timing of Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement. They emphasized the urgency of defeating the lingering effects of Trumpism and safeguarding democracy, asserting that not endorsing the incumbent would inadvertently favor former President Donald Trump, who consistently maintained a strong lead in polls against his Republican counterparts.

The ensuing controversy surrounding Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement laid bare the underlying divisions within the progressive movement, provoking a spirited and thought-provoking discourse on the movement’s priorities and strategies in the face of a complex and ever-evolving political landscape.
