Megan Rapinoe, the renowned USA Soccer athlete, expressed her strong criticism towards those who oppose the inclusion of men in women’s sports, dismissing their arguments as unfounded. During an interview, Rapinoe specifically mentioned comedian Dave Chappelle and tennis legend Martina Navratilova, voicing her disagreement with their viewpoints on the matter.
Sharing her frustrations, Rapinoe stated, “It’s disheartening to witness efforts aimed at undermining the principles of inclusivity and equality. It’s particularly disconcerting when opponents of men in women’s sports use misguided arguments. Claims of fairness suddenly become prevalent, but the reality is far from it. I challenge anyone to provide concrete evidence of trans individuals purposefully taking advantage of their trans identity in sports. Such claims are simply baseless.”
Rapinoe went on to emphasize the true essence of sports, highlighting the values of teamwork, enjoyment, and physical activity. “Sports bring people together, foster camaraderie, and promote an active lifestyle. However, it seems that the conversation surrounding sports often revolves solely around competition and winning. It’s important to shift our focus and acknowledge that we’re discussing people’s lives here.”
With a candid tone, Rapinoe expressed her disappointment, asserting, “Jokes made by Dave Chappelle that target trans individuals contribute to a harmful environment, both in words and actions. When figures like Martina Navratilova and others engage in this discussion, it extends beyond the realm of elite sports. It resonates deeply within the lives of trans people.”
When questioned about her stance on allowing a biological man identifying as a woman to join the U.S. women’s soccer team, even if it means displacing a biological woman, Rapinoe responded firmly, “Without a doubt.” She continued, “The argument that a ‘real’ woman’s place is being taken away reflects a transphobic perspective. I wholeheartedly recognize trans women as real women. Those who make such arguments reveal their disbelief in their true identities. I don’t share that disbelief.”
In recognition of her outstanding achievements, Rapinoe was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States, by President Biden in 2022.
Previously, Rapinoe voiced her opposition to H.R. 734, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which aimed to address the participation of transgender-identifying males in women’s sports. The proposed legislation sought to define sex based solely on an individual’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.
Expressing her concerns, Rapinoe took to social media, stating, “Rather than focusing on a ban that targets trans and intersex individuals in sports, let’s prioritize protecting women’s sports from issues such as unequal pay, sexual abuse, and resource disparities. It’s essential to foster an environment where all individuals, including trans kids, can thrive.”
In a joint letter addressed to House legislators, Rapinoe, along with a group of 40 athletes, expressed their hopes that transgender and intersex children would never face isolation, exclusion, or marginalization, as they believed such experiences should not be enshrined in law.
