In a moment that echoed throughout the halls of the European Parliament, a resounding wave of applause greeted the son of a Canadian pastor as he made a heartfelt plea for international intervention in his father’s case. Nathaniel Pawlowski, a mere 23 years of age, stood before the esteemed gathering on July 4, his impassioned words resonating with desperation and a plea for assistance. No longer certain of the cherished ideals of freedom and democracy, Pawlowski bemoaned the erosion of these principles in his homeland, declaring that Canada had fallen.

Representing his father, Pastor Artur Pawlowski, Nathaniel was granted the honor of addressing the EU Parliament in Brussels, shedding light on the relentless conflicts that have entangled the family with Calgary authorities in Alberta. It all began when Pastor Pawlowski defiantly expelled police and public health officials from his sacred Cave of Adullam church during an Easter service in 2021, refusing to comply with COVID-19 inspections. This act of unwavering conviction sparked a chain of events that ensnared the pastor in a web of arrests and legal entanglements.

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) apprehended the pastor on five occasions as he continued to hold services in defiance of a court order, with one arrest taking place on a bustling highway during his journey home from church. On another occasion, he was seized on the tarmac of Calgary International Airport following an extensive speaking tour in the United States. In May, Pawlowski was found guilty of mischief and breaching a release order after delivering a 19-minute speech to protesting truckers who had blocked Alberta’s border with Montana, demanding an end to federal vaccine mandates.

During his impassioned address, Pawlowski implored the truckers to remain peaceful and advised against direct confrontation with the government at the border. However, days later, he was arrested and subsequently spent 50 nights in two separate prisons, where he claimed to have endured abuse and humiliation at the hands of prison authorities who sought to incite other inmates against him.

As Pastor Pawlowski remains under house arrest, awaiting another court appearance on August 9, he also faces a pending charge under the provincial Critical Infrastructure Defense Act for allegedly participating in the border blockade, an offense that carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years.

Standing before the EU Parliament, Nathaniel Pawlowski painted a bleak picture of the erosion of fundamental rights in Canada. The freedom of religion, freedom of speech, right to protest, assemble, associate, express oneself, and have free media—all these cherished pillars of democracy have been stripped away. Dissenters are swiftly arrested, charged, and imprisoned, their voices silenced as political dissidents. To emphasize the gravity of the situation, Nathaniel shared a recorded video message from his father, comparing their ordeal in Canada to growing up behind the Iron Curtain in communist Poland.

In a distressing turn of events, Nathaniel himself faces charges for delivering a sermon outside a drag queen story hour at the Calgary Public Library, an act alleged to have violated a municipal bylaw prohibiting protests within 100 meters of recreational facilities or library entrances.

These circumstances led Nathaniel to draw parallels between the arrest of Pastor Derek Reimer, who was expelled from a public library in Calgary for interrupting a drag queen story time, and the subsequent passage of the municipal bylaw in March. This, according to Artur Pawlowski, indicates the transformation of COVID-19 protocols into tools for enforcing ideological conformity.

Nathaniel Pawlowski passionately expressed the erosion of freedoms in his homeland, likening Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to a modern-day Caligula, a ruler whose actions must not go unchecked. Asserting that these measures are executed under the guise of health, safety, and protection, Pawlowski implored the international community to recognize the encroachment of tyranny and join the fight for justice.

Among the MEPs who invited Nathaniel Pawlowski to address the parliament were Christine Anderson, a German representative who publicly rebuked Trudeau for trampling on fundamental rights, and Mislav Kolakusic, a Croatian MEP who condemned Trudeau’s quasi-liberal governance and civil rights violations.

Recounting his own experiences upon returning to Canada, Nathaniel Pawlowski shared an alarming encounter with customs officials in Montreal, who informed him of an outstanding warrant for his arrest. This revelation left him apprehensive, given his father’s arrest at Calgary International Airport in 2021, despite being assured there were no warrants against him. The family suspected foul play, with evidence of personal belongings being accessed and confiscated by authorities.

In response, a CPS spokesperson refuted the existence of any warrant for Nathaniel’s arrest and denied knowledge of any ongoing investigation. The spokesperson dismissed claims that media attention influenced their actions, asserting the inaccuracy of such statements.

Artur Pawlowski, however, expressed deep indignation at the treatment meted out by Canadian authorities, describing them as monstrous beings devoid of boundaries. He reflected on his own stand for his rights and the subsequent targeting of his children, wife, and family—an all-too-familiar tactic employed by totalitarian regimes. The pastor drew parallels to historical regimes such as the Gestapo and the KGB, condemning the Canadian authorities as sick, evil, and wicked individuals who will ultimately face justice for their actions.

The Pawlowski family’s plea reverberates across borders, a poignant reminder of the fragility of democracy and the urgency to safeguard cherished liberties. Their unwavering determination to shed light on the encroachment of tyranny serves as a rallying cry for those who believe in the inalienable rights of individuals and the triumph of justice.
